The Science of Collagen Glow Berries Zero
Not all collagen is created equal.
Two tiny peptides decide whether collagen ever reaches your skin. Here is the published research behind the ingredient we chose — Nitta Wellnex Replenwell — and what sets it apart from standard collagen on the market.
Most collagen never makes it past digestion.
When collagen is digested, the bulk of it breaks down into ordinary amino acids. Only a small fraction survives as two intact dipeptides — Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly — that are absorbed into the bloodstream. In cell studies, these are the molecules shown to prompt skin fibroblasts to multiply, migrate, and produce hyaluronic acid. In other words, the active part of collagen is smaller than most labels suggest.
According to manufacturer Nitta Gelatin, Wellnex Replenwell carries up to 30 times the level of Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly dipeptides compared with standard collagen ingredients.
Same source. Same dose. The concentration was the difference.
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study compared two collagen hydrolysates from the same raw material — one low in dipeptides (~0.1 g/kg), one high (over 2 g/kg). At an identical 5 g daily dose over 8 weeks, the high-dipeptide group showed significantly greater improvements in skin moisture, elasticity, wrinkle metrics and roughness. With the dose held constant, dipeptide concentration was the variable that moved the results.
How the peptides actually reach your skin.
Below the surface: the dipeptides are absorbed from the bloodstream beneath the skin, rise into the dermis, and set to work. The cross-section shows the route — and the change in skin condition once they arrive.
Made absorbable
Native collagen (~300,000 Da) is too large to cross the intestinal wall. Wellnex is hydrolysed to ~1,000 Da so fragments can be absorbed.
Absorbed intact
Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly pass through the intestinal lining largely intact via peptide transporters, entering the bloodstream.
Delivered to skin
In a 2012 tracer study, radiolabelled Pro-Hyp reached skin tissue rapidly and accumulated for up to 96 hours.
Active in the dermis
The dipeptides prompt fibroblasts to multiply and upregulate HAS2, driving hyaluronic acid synthesis.
A decade of controlled clinical research.
The claims above are not marketing shorthand. They rest on randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trials — the standard design for evaluating supplements, using both within-person and against-placebo comparisons.
Measured, not asserted.
Skin properties were recorded with validated dermatological instruments, in a temperature- and humidity-controlled room, in triplicate, by a blinded investigator. Each of these improved significantly versus placebo across the published trials.

Beauty from Within — Ingredient of the Year
Wellnex Replenwell was named 2021 NutraIngredients-USA Beauty from Within Ingredient of the Year. An independent panel of industry scientists cited its well-established mechanism of action, the depth of its clinical research, and its documented work on supply-chain sustainability and traceability.
A documented safety profile
Collagen hydrolysate is classified GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by the US FDA. No adverse events were reported in the 2015 or 2016 facial-skin studies; in a separate 16-week trial at 10 g daily, monitored blood chemistry showed no clinically significant abnormalities.
Texture you can see.
The trials measure moisture, elasticity and roughness. This is the kind of change in skin condition those measurements describe.
