A handful of supplement interactions are real: calcium competes with iron, high-dose zinc blocks copper, and tea or coffee reduces plant iron absorption. Most of the elaborate do-not-combine charts circulating online, however, are recycled marketing rather than evidence.
Why is there so much conflicting advice?
Because "you might be taking your supplements wrong" is a very effective way to sell a more complicated routine. When we looked at what ranks for this question, most of the top results were supplement brands citing other supplement brands, with no traceable research behind the claims. So let us separate the few real interactions from the noise.
Calcium and iron: a real competition
Both minerals use the same intestinal transporter, and calcium acutely inhibits the absorption of non-haem iron. If you take both as supplements, spacing them by about two hours is the standard practical suggestion.
The honest caveat: most of this evidence comes from single-meal laboratory studies, which tend to overstate what happens over months of ordinary mixed eating. If you take a multivitamin containing both at modest doses, you are not wasting your money. This matters most if you take a dedicated iron supplement.
Zinc and copper: the best-established one
This is the interaction with the clearest mechanism. High zinc intake triggers production of a protein in the gut lining that preferentially binds copper and prevents its absorption. Sustained intakes above roughly 40 mg a day can lead to copper deficiency.
Reassuring context for Singapore: HSA sets a maximum daily limit of 15 mg zinc and 2 mg copper in health supplements, so a single compliant local product is very unlikely to cause this. The realistic risk comes from stacking several products that each contain zinc, or from high-dose zinc bought overseas. Add up your total across everything you take.
Tea, coffee and iron
Real, and easy to work around. The tannins and polyphenols in tea and coffee bind non-haem iron, the kind found in plants and most supplements. Note that this does not meaningfully affect haem iron from meat, and vitamin C in the same meal offsets some of it.
The practical version is not "stop drinking tea". It is simply to enjoy tea and coffee between meals rather than alongside an iron-rich meal or an iron supplement.
Do fat-soluble vitamins need to be taken with food?
Directionally yes, but more weakly than commonly claimed. Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble, and trials do show a high-fat meal increases vitamin D3 absorption compared with a fat-free one.
The caveats matter, though. Those studies used large single doses, and at least one found that meal conditions changed absorption without changing the blood vitamin D level that actually reflects your status. So: taking them with a meal containing some fat is sensible and costs you nothing. It is not true that you are wasting them otherwise.
What about medicines?
This is where interactions genuinely matter clinically rather than marginally. Calcium and iron reduce absorption of thyroid medication. Several antibiotics, including tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones, bind to calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc, forming complexes that neither of you benefit from.

Which "don't combine" claims are myth?
Most of the sprawling charts. A few specifics worth retiring:
"Iron and zinc cancel each other out." Dietary iron and zinc do not meaningfully interact, and at typical multivitamin doses taken with food, competition is minimal. The effect appears mainly with high single-nutrient doses on an empty stomach.
"Multivitamins are pointless because the minerals fight." This is the implicit claim behind a lot of separate-everything marketing, and it does not hold up at the modest doses in a compliant product.
"You must take everything at precisely timed intervals." A routine you actually follow beats an optimised one you abandon in three weeks. Consistency matters far more than choreography.
A simple, realistic approach
Take most things with a meal, which suits both fat-soluble vitamins and a settled stomach. If you take a dedicated iron supplement, give it its own slot away from calcium, tea and coffee. Tally your total zinc across all products. And anchor your routine to something you already do daily, rather than inventing new occasions to remember.
