Do collagen drinks actually work?

Yes. Collagen drinks with hydrolysed collagen peptides work when you take them every day. In clinical trials, daily collagen peptides increased collagen density in the skin within 4 weeks and improved hydration and elasticity by 8 weeks. Over 3 to 6 months, trials also measured stronger nails and more comfortable knees during exercise.

This article is for you if: you've heard collagen drinks called a scam, or been told your body just digests collagen like any other protein, and you want to know what the research shows before you start one.

Collagen drinks are often called a scam. You'll hear that your stomach simply digests collagen, that it never reaches your skin, or that a cream does the same job. The research tells a more useful story: what trials measured, how collagen peptides travel from a sachet to your skin, and which myths you can let go of.

What do clinical trials show collagen drinks do?

Clinical trials show that daily collagen peptides improve skin hydration, elasticity and collagen density, and support nails and joints. A 2019 review of 11 randomised, placebo-controlled trials, with 805 people, concluded that oral collagen increases skin elasticity, hydration and dermal collagen density, with no reported side effects.[1]

  • Hydration, elasticity and wrinkles: a 2021 meta-analysis of 19 trials, with 1,125 people aged 20 to 70, found better skin hydration and elasticity and fewer wrinkles after about 90 days of hydrolysed collagen.[2] A 2023 meta-analysis of 26 trials, with 1,721 people, found significant gains in hydration and elasticity, which were stronger after 8 weeks or more.[3]
  • Collagen density: in placebo-controlled trials, collagen peptides increased collagen density in the dermis, the deeper layer of skin, after 4 weeks, and made the skin's collagen network less fragmented. Skin hydration improved after 8 weeks.[4]
  • Elasticity and fine lines: in women aged 35 to 55, 2.5 g or 5 g of collagen peptides a day improved skin elasticity after 8 weeks.[5] In women aged 45 to 65, 2.5 g a day reduced eye wrinkle volume by 20% after 8 weeks, and their skin had 65% more procollagen type I, the building block of new collagen, and 18% more elastin than with placebo.[6]
  • Nails: in a 24-week trial of 2.5 g a day, nails grew 12% faster and broke 42% less often.[7]
  • Joints: in 139 athletes with knee discomfort during sport, 5 g a day for 12 weeks reduced knee pain during activity more than placebo.[8]

If moving between Singapore's humid streets and air-conditioned offices leaves your skin feeling tight, hydration is a good change to watch for. Trials measured it after 8 weeks of daily use.[4]

How does collagen get from a drink to your skin?

Your gut breaks hydrolysed collagen down into small peptides, and some of them reach your blood intact and travel to the skin. Hydrolysed collagen is collagen already cut into short chains of amino acids, called peptides. After you take it, peptides of two or three amino acids can be found in the blood within about 2 hours.[9]

  1. Collagen peptides reach your blood within hours. In healthy volunteers who took hydrolysed collagen, collagen peptides in the blood peaked 1 to 2 hours later. The main one was Pro-Hyp (prolyl-hydroxyproline), a dipeptide, which means a peptide just two amino acids long.[10] A second dipeptide, Hyp-Gly (hydroxyprolyl-glycine), has also been measured in human blood after collagen.[11]
  2. They travel to the skin. In an animal study, Pro-Hyp given by mouth spread to tissues including the skin and joint cartilage within 30 minutes, and part of it arrived intact.[12]
  3. They signal skin cells. In lab studies on human fibroblasts, the skin cells that make collagen, Pro-Hyp increased cell growth 1.5-fold and the production of hyaluronic acid 3.8-fold.[9] Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that helps skin hold water.[3]
  4. More of these peptides, better results. In a randomised, placebo-controlled trial, a collagen with more Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly improved facial skin moisture, elasticity, wrinkles and roughness more than a collagen with less.[13]

So digestion isn't the end of collagen's story: it's how the peptides get in. For a closer look at that first step, read our guide to whether collagen survives stomach acid.

Is collagen a scam?

No. Collagen peptides have been tested in randomised, placebo-controlled trials, with measured results for skin.[1] Most of the doubt comes from a few common myths, and here is what the research shows for each.

Myth What the research shows
"Collagen is just digested like any other protein." Digestion breaks collagen into small peptides, and some, such as Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly, are found intact in the blood, with levels peaking 1 to 2 hours after a dose[10] [11]
"You can't absorb it, so it never reaches your skin." In an animal study, Pro-Hyp reached the skin within 30 minutes.[12] In people, collagen density in the dermis rose after 4 weeks of daily collagen peptides[4]
"A collagen cream does the same job." Skin's outer layer lets through only small molecules, under about 500 daltons.[14] Collagen is a large protein, three twisted strands about 300 nanometres long,[15] so a cream works on the surface, while a drink's peptides work from within
"You'll see results in days." Changes build over weeks: collagen density from 4 weeks, hydration and elasticity by 8 weeks, and fewer wrinkles at about 90 days[4] [5] [2]
"Collagen is only for older skin." Trials pooled in a 2021 meta-analysis included adults aged 20 to 70, with better hydration and elasticity and fewer wrinkles overall[2]
"All collagen is the same." The form matters: collagen with more Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly gave greater skin improvements.[13] So does the dose: skin trials used 2.5 to 10 g a day[1]

How should you take a collagen drink to see results?

Take it every day and give it at least 8 to 12 weeks. Trials gave collagen daily, and the gains in hydration and elasticity were stronger after 8 weeks or more.[3]

  • Make it a daily habit. Pair it with something you already do every day, like your morning skincare or brushing your teeth at night.
  • Judge it at 8 to 12 weeks. Skin trials ran for 8 to 24 weeks.[1] Our guide to how long collagen takes to work sets out the timeline goal by goal.
  • Take photos. Use the same light and angle every 4 weeks, as small changes are easier to see side by side.
  • Keep it going. Some benefits lasted after people stopped. Four weeks after their last dose, older women still had better skin elasticity,[5] and 88% of people in the nail trial still had improved nails.[7] To keep your results, keep the habit.

What should you look for in a collagen drink?

Look for hydrolysed collagen peptides at a dose trials have used, ideally rich in dipeptides and paired with vitamin C, in a format you'll enjoy every day.

  • A trial-level dose: skin trials used 2.5 to 10 g of hydrolysed collagen a day.[1]
  • Dipeptides: collagen richer in Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly gave greater improvements in skin moisture, elasticity and wrinkles.[13]
  • Vitamin C: your skin uses vitamin C to make its own collagen, which is why the two are so often paired.[16]
  • Marine collagen: 14 of the 26 trials in a 2023 meta-analysis used fish collagen, and the authors found fish the most effective source for skin hydration.[3] It also suits people who avoid beef or pork.
  • A format you'll keep up: a sachet you drink straight from the pack makes a daily dose easy, even on busy mornings.

Collagen Glow Berries is made around these points. Each sachet has 6,000 mg of Wellnex marine collagen dipeptide: hydrolysed Types I and III collagen from tilapia, made by enzymatic hydrolysis. Its glycine, proline and hydroxyproline come in a 3:1:1 ratio, which reflects collagen's own structure, where every third amino acid is glycine and proline and hydroxyproline fill many of the other places.[15] Each sachet also has 250 mg of vitamin C and 100 mg of bilberry extract. It's ready to drink, with no water needed: take 1 sachet a day, in the morning before breakfast or before bed. It contains fish, so skip it if you have a fish allergy.
