Collagen and PDRN: should you pair them?
What the science says
PDRN, the “salmon DNA” ingredient, is on every skincare shelf right now, and it's starting to make the same jump collagen did: from the clinic to something you simply take every morning. Here's what it does, why it pairs so well with collagen, and what to look for.
Summary
- PDRN signals, collagen supplies. They work on different parts of the same process.
- PDRN started in clinics and is now moving into everyday formats, the same way collagen went from cream to sachet.
- Collagen drinks are absorbed as small peptides that reach the skin through the blood, and oral PDRN takes the same route in.
- Vitamin C and sunscreen decide how much of that new collagen you keep.
The short answer
They do different jobs. That's why they pair well.
PDRN is a signal. It tells the cells in your skin that make collagen (fibroblasts) to get to work.
Collagen peptides are the supply. They give your body the building blocks those cells need, plus small peptides that show up in your blood and carry a signal of their own.
One tells your skin to build. The other makes sure it has what it needs to build with.
PDRN
The signal
Switches on the adenosine A2A receptor, which prompts fibroblasts to make new collagen.
Collagen peptides
The supply
Glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, the amino acids collagen is made of.
Vitamin C
The spark
The cofactor your body needs to form stable collagen fibres at all.
First, what is PDRN?
Salmon DNA, originally made for healing wounds.
PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is made of purified DNA fragments, usually taken from salmon or trout. It was first studied in medicine for things like burns and slow-healing wounds, long before it made its way into beauty clinics.
In the lab, PDRN increases collagen build-up in fibroblasts and dials down the enzymes that break collagen apart. It also works through a second route: cells that are stressed or ageing struggle to make fresh nucleotides, and PDRN gives them ready-made fragments to reuse. Think of it as raw material for repair, delivered straight to the cells that need it.
12 weeks
In a split-face study of 20 people, the side treated with PDRN injections showed better elasticity and thicker skin than the untreated side.
Decades
PDRN was used in wound and burn care long before beauty brands discovered it. The skincare evidence is much younger.
219 people
A 2024 review pooling nine clinical studies found consistent wrinkle reduction and better texture and elasticity within three months.
From clinic to kitchen
PDRN is following collagen's path.
Collagen started as something you had injected or rubbed on, then became something you drink. PDRN is heading the same way: first a clinic treatment, then a serum, and now an ingredient you can take by mouth.
In the clinic
Injected "skin boosters" like Rejuran. This is where most of the clinical evidence was built, and where PDRN earned its reputation.
In skincare
Serums brought PDRN into everyday routines. The molecules are large, so much of the benefit is hydration and soothing at the surface, while the fibroblasts sit deeper down.
Taken by mouth
The same route collagen takes: absorbed through the gut, carried in the blood, reaching the skin from underneath. Food-grade PDRN is now going into drinks and sachets across Asia.
Honest note: the research on PDRN taken by mouth is newer than the injection studies. What we do know is that dietary nucleotides are absorbed and reused by the body, and that daily supplementation has been tested in people, including a recent placebo-controlled trial in older adults.
Why they pair
A signal needs something to build with.
Asking your skin to make more collagen only goes so far if the raw materials are running low. Collagen is unusually rich in glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, and a daily collagen drink is a direct way to top those up.
Collagen peptides also do a little signalling of their own. One of them, Pro-Hyp, circulates in the blood after you drink collagen, and lab studies show it encourages skin fibroblasts to grow and make hyaluronic acid.
Then there's vitamin C. Without it, your body can't form stable collagen fibres, no matter how strong the signal or how good the supply.
To be clear: no clinical study has tested PDRN and oral collagen together yet. The case for pairing them comes from how each one works, not from a combined trial.
How to pair them
Signal and supply. One routine.
Collagen in the morning, PDRN at night, sunscreen in between. Nothing complicated, just consistent.
Give it time: skin studies measure changes after 8 to 12 weeks of daily use. The signal and the supply both work best when they show up every day.
Both PDRN and marine collagen come from fish. If you have a fish allergy, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take regular medication, check with your doctor first.
The supply side, handled. The signal side, soon.
Building blocks and the spark. One sachet.
Collagen Glow Berries gives you 6,000mg of Wellnex™ marine collagen di-peptides with 250mg of vitamin C in every sachet. Tear, sip, done. And keep an eye on this space: we're working on the signal half too.

The habit, in their words.
"Good but takes time"
Took about 6 weeks for me to see real changes. Patience pays off. Now I won't go without it.
"Game changer!"
I've been taking Collagen Glow Berries for 2 months now and my skin has never looked better. Hydrated, plump, and glowing. Friends keep asking what I've changed.
"I'm a believer now"
Was skeptical at first. Collagen drinks felt like marketing hype. After 4 months I have to admit the results are real. My skin, hair, and nails are all noticeably better.
Your questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I drink collagen around a Rejuran or skin booster appointment?+
There's no known interaction between drinking collagen and PDRN treatments. They work through different routes. Still, follow your doctor's aftercare advice, and mention any supplements you take at your consultation.
Is PDRN the same as PN (polynucleotides)?+
They come from the same source but differ in size. A recent review proposed calling fragments under 1,500 kDa PDRN and longer chains PN. Marketing often uses the two terms interchangeably.
Does eating salmon give me PDRN?+
Not in a useful way. PDRN is DNA fragments purified and standardised from salmon, at concentrations you'd never get from a fillet. It's a supplement ingredient, not a dinner.
Is there a vegan PDRN?+
Yes. Plant-derived versions from ginseng, peony and other plants are now used in skincare. The research on them is early, mostly lab work and small studies.
Can you take PDRN by mouth?+
Yes. Food-grade PDRN from purified salmon DNA is now made for drinks, sachets and capsules. Your body absorbs nucleotides through the gut and recycles them for cell repair. The skin-specific research on oral PDRN is still early, so look for brands that are honest about that.
How long does collagen take to show results?+
Most skin studies measure changes after 8 to 12 weeks of daily use. Consistency matters more than dose: one proper serving every day beats a big scoop now and then.
